I dropped the ball last week, so you get two encounters this week. First up is the seventh encounter in my 4E conversion of The Sunless Citadel. Come back tomorrow for encounter 8.

Encounter 7: Prisoners of War
Encounter Level 2 (600 XP)

Four goblins are being held by the kobolds for ransom, or dinner, presenting the PCs with the opportunity to ally themselves with the goblins instead of the kobolds. This encounter includes the following creatures:

  • 4 goblin cutters
  • 6 kobold skirmishers

The doors to the jail room are barred and locked from the outside (Thievery DC 20). An attempt to open the north door will draw the attention of the kobolds from the Hall of Dragons (encounter 7). When the PCs enter the room, read the following:

Four small humanoids are chained together in the center of this filthy, crumbling chamber. Their bonds are thick and rusted, and attached to a large iron spike set in the floor. Several broken weapons and sundered shields lie in one corner.

The goblins will promise anything to the PCs in return for their release. The chains can be unlocked using the key held by Yusdrayl, picked (Thievery DC 20), or broken (DC 26). If Meepo is with the party when they attempt to free the goblins, he will cry out in alarm, alerting the guards nearby, who arrive in 1 round.

The goblins have no power to guarantee any of the promises they make, and will seek to flee and/or double-cross the PCs at the first opportunity.

Tactics
The kobold skirmishers will attempt to flank the PCs. Any goblins that try to escape will be killed. Meepo will flee back to his room.

Features
Illumination: Darkness. The PCs must provide their own light source.
