This is the 22nd encounter in my 4E conversion of The Sunless Citadel. I combined areas 44, 45, and 46 of the original adventure for this encounter.

Encounter 22: Rift Node
Encounter Level 2 (625 XP)

Overview
Some past geological event rent this section of the citadel, exposing the nest of a thoqqua. The creature attacks any intruders into its node or the old shrine. This encounter includes:

  • 1 thoqqua

Area Description

Read the following to the players as they approach the rift:

The tunnel is interrupted here by a rent in the earth. The rift is free of the phosphorescent fungus that grows so thickly in the lower levels of the citadel. Past the rift, the tunnel continues, though it has shifted 10 feet to the west.

Read the following to the players when the enter the node:

A stone antechamber hangs off the rift, its walls riddled with 1-foot-diameter holes. A fiery light shines out of one such hole.

Read the following to the players when they enter the room at the end of the tunnel:

Faded mosaic tiles still cover parts of the wall, but most have fallen and shattered. Situated at the center of the chamber stands a slim pedestal of rusted iron shaped like an upright dragon. In the dragon’s mouth rests and empty tray.

The features of this area include:

  • Illumination: dim light
  • Stone door: the stone door leading to the shrine is stuck closed (Strength check DC 18)
  • Treasure: two sapphires, worth 50 gp each, can be found in the stomach of the thoqqua

Tactics
The thoqqua’s tremorsense alerts it to the presence of any creature within 60ft. It leaps from its hole and attacks the first PC to enter the node or enter the hallway across from the stone door, using its burning charge.
